Lab-grown and mined diamonds are optically and chemically identical: the same crystal, the same fire, the same hardness. A trained gemologist needs specialist equipment to tell them apart.
Where they differ
The distinction is origin. A mined diamond formed over billions of years deep in the earth; a lab-grown diamond is created in weeks in a controlled environment that recreates those conditions. Because the supply chain is shorter, a lab-grown stone typically costs a fraction of a mined one of the same size and grade.
For many of our clients that means a larger, cleaner centre stone for the same budget — and a piece with a clear, traceable origin.
Which is right for you?
Both are real diamonds. If provenance and resale tradition matter most, mined may appeal; if value and a modern, transparent origin matter more, lab-grown is hard to beat. Either way, look for certification and a jeweller who will show you the stone in person.
